Earlier this year, in January of 2017, Director Preston Browning and author Steve Almond developed a new Wellspring fellowship for emerging writers. The purpose of the fellowship is to provide young and emerging writers an opportunity to work intensively on their craft while helping to maintain operations at Wellspring House. The Wellspring Writer-in-Residence receives yearlong residence at the retreat, private quarters including bedroom and office, and a monthly stipend, in return for 15-20 hours of work.
The fellowship’s inaugural year drew 60 applications, a competitive pool from which writers Sarah Colwill-Brown and Jonathan Escoffery were selected as finalists. When it transpired that Sarah and Jonathan were a couple and could potentially share the residency, Preston was delighted to be able to offer both of them the award.
In May of 2017, Sarah and Jonathan left their jobs in Boston, threw their belongings into Preston’s pick-up truck, and shipped up to Ashfield to spend the next year working on their writing projects and assisting Preston with the running of the retreat. Sarah is working on her second novel (and she and her agent are working on selling her first!) and Jonathan is currently revising his first story collection with his agent.
Welcome, Sarah & Jonathan!
